Rhythm and Vines is an annual event and it started in 2003, it is very popular and the whole town of Gisborne is aware of it. This is because it brings in 11 million dollars worth of tourism. It creates many job opportunity's and boosts the economy. It occurs over a 3 day period over New Years. Those who do not know of this event could find themselves in congested streets, bad traffic, busy cafes and crowed beaches due to the 83% increase of people in Gisborne. Signs are put up all around the town to notify people of congestion, and where the camp is situated. This is so that festival goers find their way to Rhythm and Vines but also so the general public know which roads to avoid congestion. Rhythm and Vines also has their own website containing information about when the festival is, how to get tickets ect. They also have many multimedia pages such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Pintrest. 87% of those who attend the festival are under 25. Most of the people attending the festival will own an account to one or more of these websites which will help to notify those in the Gisborne area. Standard procedure before a large scale event such as Rhythm and Vines is a letter is written to neighboring houses outlining the date of the event, the hours noise will be made, where complaints can be laid etc. These are distributed to houses in a 500m radius of the event, who are likely to be affected.
Evaluation
This aspect of planning is require to let the public know that an event is going to take place, that might impact on their lives in any way. Many signs were put up to let the public know that an event was taking place, these were put on all the main roads surrounding the event. A negative is that not everyone that is effected may have seen this sign and could be stuck in unexpected congestion. To improve this more signs should be distributed further away from the event. A weakness to the event is that the citizens in the town of Gisborne could be worried about more drivers and a higher chance of collision due to intoxicated drivers. A strength is that the police did put checkpoints in place to reduce this but to put the citizens mind at ease they should make them aware of this.
