Explain and evaluate the Social, Economic and or Environmental impacts of the event, in the short and long term.
SocialWhere there any positive or negative impacts on a community of people/individuals?
Positive: The Rhythm and Vines festival has created 2000 jobs for event planners, painters, tent erectors, security inspectors, caterers etc. It also provides 12 full time event planning jobs. This means that these people will be able to provide to for their families. Local food vendors do not get paid to attend the festival however they do get a great customer base from selling to thousands and free advertisement. This festival encourages many others to start up in this area which will furthermore increase the standard of living in Gisborne and the local economy. Another positive is that this event provides entertainment for the Gisborne community, it is also cheaper for them to attend as they do not have to pay for travel or accommodation, it gives young people a chance to make new friends from all over the country giving a sense of unity. Negative There could be a number of negative effects from Rhythm and Vines occurring, one is that no all voluenteers are fully trained in first aid as they maybe required to help usher cars into parks. This could put them under unnecessary stress. Rhythm and Vines can help keep businesses afloat by generating enough revenue to tide over the slower months, this means that there is quite a lot of competition as to who books the Rhythm and Vines contracts. Businesses that miss out could possibly go out of business and no longer be able to provide for their families. There is also an element of reliance on the community to provide enough food and drinks etc for the incoming crowd. The event creates a great deal of sound which can disrupt the neighbours, this is over the New Years period which is generally louder anyway. To combat this the Rhythm and Vines organisers have planned to have the event 12 km from the city to disrupt as little people as possible, the neighbours have also been notified of this. In order to keep the peace all amplified must will be turned off by 11pm (with the exception of New Years). As well as sound pollution neighbours could be negatively affected by light pollution. Lighting is used for the safety of the campers when going to use the bathrooms at night, in order to disrupt the public as little as possible the lighting has been angled away from all main roads. Congestion however is a negative which can cause great frustration among the community. The organisers of Rhythm and Vines have done their best to avoid excess cars on the roads as mentioned in Task 2, in order to minimise the amount of congestion. |
EconomicWere there any economic benifits or impacts?
Positive: Rhythm and Vines generates 11 million dollars approx however, the festival increases the local economy by 30 million dollars in total as there is not enough room for everyone to stay onsite. This increases the money that hoteliers and surrounding establishments can make. In 2010 after the event the whole of Gisborne ran out of Pies and Petrol, this is because they sold out which meant they could gain a lot of profit, this also empathises the reliance on the public to provide enough resources for the influx of customers. The impact of not having the event would be detrimental as many small businesses rely on the festival to make a living. Without the festival the livelihood and quality of life for those living in Gisborne could be decreased. This festival generates a lot of tourism for Gisborne and stimulates the demand for other festivals of this sort, which also generate income for many people in the town. Economic benefits are not only to those who are working the festival and organising it but the festival increases tourism to the area. This means that more people will want to live in Gisborne raising the value of houses in the area. The festival is sponsered , Negative, There were not many negative effects on the economy because of the festival as the influx of people created more customers, this gives the citizens a great opportunity to gain profit. This event can be very expensive for many people- on average $500+ is spent per person which means that not everyone can afford to attend this annually, as it is a very expensive 3 day holiday. |
EnvironmentalWere there any positive or negative environmental impacts caused by this event?
Positive: This event is visited by a large amount of people who otherwise would not have come to visit Gisborne, it is a unique opportunity to see a new environment. The event creates a lot a profit to fix any damage made to the surrounding. Fortunately the event is only 3 days which is not a significant amount of time to cause serious damage to the grounds, if this was to occur then in future years resource consent will not be gained. All of the resources that are used at the festival aside from petrol are renewable and sustainable. The use of public transport is highly recommended at this event to reduce carbon emmissions as mentioned in task 2. If the weather is good the impact on the environment is minimal, in rainy weather the ground is more susceptible to damage from trampling and tent pegs etc. Negative: 83% of people that come to Rhythm and Vines are from out of town, they require a lot of food for over 10,000 people which requires extra stock in supermarkets in cafe. This increases the amount of miles that food has to travel increasing carbon emissions. Thousands of people travel to the event creating a large carbon footprint, however the organisers have done there best to reduce this as described in task 2. |
Task 3 Evaluation
Social Impacts: Socially this event has a large impact on those who live in the area, it is mostly positive e.g helps bring in profits, and most of the negatives have solutions put in place. The festival is only three days long and is tolerated by most neighboring houses. In the short term this is not a problem, but in the long run neighboring houses could have young children disrupted by loud music or becoming involved in an accident with an intoxicated driver as there is a greater amount around New Years in relation to the festival. The impacts are very minor mostly because the care that the organisers have taken to ensure the comfort of those in neighboring properties, this is to ensure approval by the Gisborne District Council for following years. Without this consent the festival could not occur, this would result in job loss and these lack of funds would make it hard for some to support their families. The biggest impact for this event is the traffic and management of the congestion. The congestion is unavoidable with 25,000 approx people coming to one venue however the organisers have made buses available and encouraged car pooling to ensure less cars on the road, less chances for accidents and clogging up traffic. This traffic could make travel times for locals longer, they may have to take detours. This could cause them to loose money as they can then not work the same hours or spend as much time with family, as the commute is longer. However the profits and benefits to the entire community of outweighs the negatives. This has got the biggest impact as it affects everyone who lives in Gisborne and helps boost the economy by 30 million dollars approx. Not just the money but this income helps the people of Gisborne to live comfortably.
Economic Impacts: I think that this is the second largest impact, it is very closely linked with the social impacts. In this case the positives of the 11 million boost of the economy outweigh the negative which is some people will not be able to attend as the prices are high. However these high prices allow many to make a sufficient profit to live off. This festival is crucial to the survival of small businesses in Gisborne. In the short term this will allow people to make purchases and to keep businesses afloat, in the long run it could help families to own their own homes etc. I think that this has the second biggest impact because it can make such a difference to the lives of the people who live in Gisborne. The unneeded money from the festival could be used to make a park or recreational center or even hiring more teachers for children in the area to help benefit the community, this could have a huge impact on these kids lives. This is not as great an impact as the social impacts because it does not affect as many people.
Environmental Impacts: The least impact was made on the environment as it was planned so well by the organisation team that not much of a difference was made to the environment on the whole in the short term. The biggest environmental impact is the trampling of young plants and soil. There are both positives and negative effects on the environment and it is to be expected with such a large event. Rhythm and Vines has never struggled to get resource consent and are doing their part to help New Zealand stay clean and green. In the short term this does not seem to have a great deal of impact, however in the long run the use of tents and thousands of people could permanently damage the grass and soil. The environment is not as great of an impact because most of the damage is reversible.
